What is Granite? Granite for house signs is becoming increasingly popular, but do you know what granite really is? Granite is simply a type of extremely hard rock. Granite is a type of Igneous rock that is, rock formed from ancient volcanic activity. The rock is dug or blasted from the ground or hacked from the side of mountains. This process is called quarrying. This quarried rock is then cut, sliced and polished to make the material that we know as granite. Granites are extremely hard, highly resistant to erosion and wear. Even resistant to acid attack!
These attributes make granite an ideal choice of natural material for use as house signs and house numbers. Most house signs have been made from various types of black granite, however today coloured granites are increasingly being used.
The polished finish on granites is very tough indeed, it is possible to scratch granite but you have to work at it! The natural grain of granite is very fine and enables the engraving of detailed images and artwork. The high, glasslike polish of granite makes it the ideal natural material for photo engraving or laser imagery. House signs can also be superbly engraved by both sandblasting and router. Natural granites have subtle variations in color and shade that no artificial material can match. No artificial stone has a polish the equal to real granite. Natural granites will resist weathering and erosion and wear in a way that no artificial alternative can do.
