Granite House Signs Engraved "In Relief"
Granites are very fine grained natural rocks and can be engraved very well using the "in relief" technique. Granite usually has a highly polished finish and this can contrast well with the natural finish of the background. Black granite house signs engraved in relief suits this method especially well. The lettering and the images and design standing proud with a dark highly polished finish. The background will have a lighter shade of grey. In this method to make a practical house sign the engraving needs to be relatively deeply cut.
To improve the visibility of the house name the background can be painted white silver or gold, or gilded withreal gold leaf.

A house sign or plaque made in this way has a simple minimlist look that will suit many homes and tastes. House signs made in this way will be less readable when wet as the grey background turns somewhat darker, but this is only a marginal issue and I have not found it to be a problem.
