GREEN SLATE HOUSE SIGNS
Sometimes only a green slate house sign will do! Green slate can look very countryish (I think I just invented a word there!) and rustic and this natural look can suit many homes perfectly.
The quality of various types of green slate can vary enormously from country to country and from quarry to quarry. English cumberland green slate is a superb material for house signs, very hard and very resistant to wear and weathering. However the colour and viening of the slate can vary from batch to batch. It is always beautiful and if you can cope with this natural variation (and you should! Buying natural materials is all about loving the natural variation.)it is without doubt one of the best slates for a home sign.Green slate from other countries cn be problematical. I have found some green slates from both China and Brazil to be excellent house sign materials. The colour of these slates is more consistant than cumberland slate and usually a lighter and greener green!
The problem may come if the slate fades discolours or bleaches in the sun. The good news is that the colour can often be restored easily with the right treatment. This can also be avoided by sealing the slate with the correct type of sealer. If you source your house sign from an experianced signmaker, he (or she) will have the experience to supply a suitable type of slate. As with any type of natural stone house signs, try to choose an appropriate design and font to suit both the type of home you live in and the house name itself. Many types of green slate are excellent for engraving and make fine house signs and plaques.
