MARBLE FOR HOUSE SIGNS
Marble is a metamorphic sedimentary stone, layed down as sea bed silt millions of years ago. The calcite from the fossil shells and bodies of creatures that lived in the silt has leached into the surrounding silt. The resultant limestone was been changed, metamorphised, over vast periods of time and pressure has conspired to create Marble.
Marble house signs are not common. The most obvious feature of marble that differentiates it from stone is the ability of marble to take a high polish. Most marble house signs are polished. This polish will erode and degrade over time. Marble house signs are best located in a sheltered site to minimise this effect. However any marble house sign should give decades of use.
The probability is that you are considering a marble house sign simply because you love marble. What better reason can there be? If you are trying to match up to an existing type of marble, take a photograph of your favourite marble on your digital camera or mobile phone to show your house sign maker. He may be able to identify the marble, and if he cannot match it exactly will be able to suggest alternatives.

Natural marbles are appear in a vast array of colours and patterns. Each type of marble has its charm, the veining in marble that gives it its character is the result of millions of years of geological activity. The products spewed out of a plastics factories simply cannot compete! It may be that the pretend marbles will claim to last longer, but will they age gracefully as a real marble will do? Furthermore, no natural marble will degrade into toxic slime! Nuff said!
In spite of being a marble mason myself I have made very few marble house signs over the years. If you happen to be a house sign maker who does make natural marble signs, and you would like your signs featured on this page. Please feel free to send me a few photo's and a brief description and I will gladly post them. I will always credit you in the text.
